Tips for Searching in the Library Catalog

The Library Catalog has a variety of tools to make your searches more productive. Follow these tips to make use of the tools:
  • Too many results?  Try to narrow your search with the facets in the left column of the catalog. You can select:
    • Format - select Articles, Books, Media, etc.
    • Publication Year - select the last 5, 10, or 25 years OR enter a range of years
    • Language - select one language, e.g., English, if too many results are in a language you don't read
  • Need the newest -- or the oldest -- sources available?  Use the drop-down menu for Sort by to rearrange the results.
  • Want more resources like one you've found?  Open the View Description portion of the item's record. Books, films and recordings have Subjects assigned to them, which are descriptive of their content. Select a subject that is most descriptive of what you're researching and the catalog will search for items with that specific subject.
    • Broader subjects will return a lot more results but be aware that these results might not be as nearly related to your topic.
    • Narrower subjects are more likely to be related to your topic but you may get only a few results, maybe even only the item you found the subject listed in.
  • Want to know more about a source before you select it? Open the View Description portion of the record. Here you may find a list of the source's Contents and/or a Summary. Reading through these sections may give you a better idea of what the source is about or its contents.
  • Want to browse the shelves for related books (or recordings)?  Especially while the library shelves are closed to browsing, it is very helpful that the catalog has virtual browsing! Select Browse the Shelf in the record and see what materials are nearby. This is useful because library materials are shelved by subject, so similar items will be grouped together.
  • Need more sources than this library has?  If you are getting good results with a search but not enough sources, select Libraries Worldwide in the left column under Held by Library. If you find a source here that Doane doesn't have access to, select the Request Item through Interlibrary Loan button and finish filling out the form with your information. We'll ask another library to send it. Once you're notified the item is available, come to the library to pick it up!
