HIS 342 / PSI 342 - U.S. and the Middle East

This guide is an introduction to some of the key resources for students doing research projects for the course "U.S. and the Middle East."

Finding country information

There are several places within the library and its website that you may find information, historical and current, on countries in the Middle East and North Africa. Check these resources for your analysis of two countries in the region:

Historical

Library catalog (WorldCat) -- search your country or, alternatively, search a topic or issue in general and then locate your country via the index

    • get a call number for print books then browse the shelves in that area for related materials
    • expand your catalog search to Libraries Worldwide to find other print books to get through interlibrary loan

Readers Guide Retrospective: 1890-1982 -- search this index for periodical articles published in American magazines

    • articles in print periodicals the library owns -- found in north condensed shelving, lower level of the library
    • other articles can be requested through interlibrary loan

Current

New York Times* -- Times Topics include country pages with news and commentaries, plus a timeline of articles on the country

    • search more broadly for current news, or archives for older stories
    • articles from 1923 to 1980 are restricted to five per day
    • * you must have an account to access this newspaper

Wall Street Journal -- search for full-text articles from this newspaper

    • use Advanced Search to limit date of publication and use Location to narrow to your country
    • articles are in HTML, so do not include illustrations -- which are infrequent in WSJ anyway

WestlawNext Campus Research -- search U.S. & international newspapers

    • select News in the Browse All Content tab (top of third column)
    • search for your country and a topic, or select a region or topic to search from the list below the search box
